Black Race Splitting in Two: A Round Table

Folks, I just got the news from Juan Williams of NPR and FOX News fame. Black people have been split down the middle and separated into two new races. If you are like me, this comes as a great shock as racial identity is one of the few things that tends to hold steady in ones life. But, according to Juan, things is ’bout to change roun’ here. I’m lying if I do not tell you how nervous I am. Perhaps there will be mass mailing explaining the situation in a calming tone, listing the benefits of the new arrangement.

I don’t know how you find out which camp you fall into. There are so many details that will have to be considered as the new races are being organized. Who’s gonna get the various ancestral inheritances? Who gets the oral tradition? Which race gets credit for stop lights? What about the first heart transplant (Wasn’t that a black dude)?

Perhaps my greatest fear is what the new race names will be. Will one of the new races get to keep “African American” while the other gets “Black.” There are some other candidates that do nothing for my current apprehension: “Negro,” “Colored,” and the infamous . . .

In all seriousness, I find Juan Williams’ assessment of a new Pew Research Center poll lacks nuance. Juan pits the poor and the hip-hop culture with which they’ve been branded, against Black middle class who’s Cosby-esque views on personal responsibility are only trumped by their anachronistic allegiance to New Deal politics. Whether you buy Juan’s analysis or not, the issues he raises are worth a deeper a look and thats just what I propose. If all goes well. This Sunday, Dec. 2nd, I am going to host a round table on the splitting black race. Check in with WRG for views on this strange but urgent topic.

Radio Venezuela en Vivo

With the charismatic firebrand Chavez at its helm, Venezuela is both a magnet for sensationalism and repellent for clear view into the inner workings. I have found myself both cheering and jeering at the things I’ve heard attributed to the country’s leader. One thing I have very little sense of, is how Venezuelan people’s views vary along that nations political spectrum.

I cannot promise anything, but I have a feeling that this radio project will offer a better glimpse of this turbulent ideological landscape than many other channels. I got word of this project from a friend that, though I do not have much shared time with, I trust and respect. Maybe, like me, you are optimistic that South America will lead the Western Hemisphere forward toward alternatives to what Cythia Mckinney called “economic policy based on consumption,” and “energy policy based on war.” Or perhaps, you are weary of demagogic leaders who misuse populism to trample democratic institutions. Or you might just be one of those info junkies who leaves BBC radio on while you sleep. If any of these describe you, you’ll want to listen to these broadcasts or even lend some computing resources to the effort.

Culture Preview Mix

An event planner that I recently met told me that a good way to get the word out about a new event is to throw a pre-event. So, I decided that I would have a brunch to kick-off Culture. The culture crew has 5 core members - 4 djs and a promoter - as well as partners who consult on everything from flyer design to vendors. The pre-event brunch was meant to introduce all of these new friends to my more immediate fam.

Brunch was a great success. About 30 people came together over whole-wheat belgian waffles, vegan pancakes, fresh fruit, turkey sausage, and other goodies. We listned to some cuts from Blue Note’s Blue Brazil Compilation and generally chilled the hell out.

That morning, I met DJ Realism of The Need to Calm, a weekly online radio show. She has listened to some fo the WRG mixes and thought the vibes worked together. So, she offered to host a preview mix for the Culture event. I offer you the mix now after the fact and I encourage you to check out The Need to Calm every Friday from 9am to 12pm PST.
