What’s WRG really?
“What’s really good.” This phrase is as much a statement as it is a question. One could be asking: “What’s out there that is actually worth my attention?” But ‘whats really good’ could also be the opening lines of an introduction; “Ladies and gentleman, I present to you those things that are truly dope.” WRG intends to bring you things that we think are truly dope. That often means music. We’ve been digging through the universe of sound looking for comfortable places and magnificent views and are happy to report that there is more out there than we had ever dreamed. Thus, this outpouring, this homage, this archive.
WRG was founded 2006 by Brandon Brown aka DJ Be Brown aka Orfeu Negro.
Born in Atlanta, GA, Be Brown has always viewed music, politics, and spirituality as inseparable. From the transformational energy of the choir at the Church where his father was a deacon, it was a short step to the soul shaking funk that gave life to family gatherings. Years later, when a friend took Be to the Shelter, New York’s classic house gathering, Brown felt like he was home. He began buying records and saving for turntables, and eventually found himself opening for veteran party rockers like DJ Samir, Raz, and DJ Center at Brooklyn’s legendary Buttafly. Now an Oakland, CA resident, Be is inspired by a love for blending music across genres in order to trace the inherent unity within Black music. He can be found rocking the ever eclectic front room at Oakland’s premiere monthly, ‘The People,’ bumping underground soul and broken beats at the ‘Experiments in Sound’ party in West Oakland, or rockin’ party cuts at a fund raiser for some of Oakland’s world class social change makers.
